There have probably been 100 pictures like this I'm sure. Armillaria mellea. Honey mushroom.
There were many behind the tree too. Black oak. I took about 100 of the best, maybe 4 pounds. Super white gills, many still behind the veil. They have that yellow tinge too, that's typical of the early ones here. I'll be talking some walks this weekend hoping for better things. We haven't had that much rain though, and I see forecast doesn't look like much is coming for the next week.

Visit the counties adjacent to Lake Michigan. We had lots of lake effect all rain in the counties along Lake Michigan. It is perfectly legal to collect mushrooms in Michigan State Parks, as it is also legal to collect fruits, nuts, and berries for consumption. State Parks to check out include Petoskey, Ludington, Silver Lake, P.J. Hoffmaster, Saugatuck, Van Buren, Grand Mere, Warren Woods, Warren Dunes, and perhaps Yankee Springs, south of Grand Rapids. I know the last few I listed have plenty of wooded areas to explore. Hope this helps.

I'm still working I'm afraid. I will be going up to Presque Isle again next week though, and hope I'm not to late to collect what the recent rains may have made - might be time for the bolete I collect there. My bow is coming with me too. There's pretty many grouse this year, but I suck at that - thank god for the bro-in-law. I do know the land north of Lundington and the PM river intimately, and have seen 100 species days there in fall. Like a classroom.
I got a few more honeys today but only the button were free of larva.
I was a bit surprised to also see winter mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) in prefect condition on a giant stump someone had dumped (unknown species).

Yesterday I noticed a giant honey mushroom near a white oak stump that I cut down about 10 years ago. 100 grams. It was alone. My guess is that it had to push the fruiting body from far down, through allot of dirt that is nearly hard as iron.
