My first spore print.

Yup, had never done it before. While out last night I picked two mushrooms to practice keying and try to get a spore print. I tried keying them out before the print and got to dead ends both times. This morning I had two very nice prints! Man that's cool. Now, back to the key!

I used those exact instructions. Making a spore print is EASY, keying isn't.
Well, "isn't" being relative its not hard to follow instructions but even in my limited experience the variations in each fungal growth doesn't always fit any particular "key." Basically a key is set of written descriptions you follow down to identify a particular fungus. "If the cap is red..." and then at the end of the line there'd a number for you to jump to to further identify the fungus, etc. Here's a good place to start - at least its where I am starting. Key to Major Groups I used all sorts of keys back in college to ID different species of fish, insects, and aquatic and terrestrial plants. They generally follow they same rules. You'll likely get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Ok, keying it out with the spore print the first one is a Russula of some sort. Once I hit that point it looked pretty complicated and for what I want to know so far that is plenty! Bright red cap that is perfectly circular, brilliant white gills and stem that snapped very easily. Flesh crumbled. Pure white spore print.

The other I believe will be a Leccinum of some sort based upon the key. Cap was an yellowish rosy mix (some might call it orangish) and spongy (but it was very mature), tubes on the underside that were tannish and bruised a darker tan. Spore print was black. The stem had scabers and very fibrous (which I chalked up to age).

SO, good practice if nothing else. Fun for a detail FREAK like myself - LOL.

Roosevelt, a member here has posted about it, his name is BadByte, he took one of those collage frames for family pictures, and put a different shroom into each opening on the collage and let the shroom do its thing, was quite impressive.mike
