Portable GPS question

I have determined that I would like to have a GPS system for both mushroom hunting and ice fishing.

It would be really wonderful to be able to plug the same system into my dash for mapping.

Is it possible to merge these two technologies without spending $1,000+?

I have no experience with GPS. But I know this...I simply have lost a very large oak tree that produced two great hens last fall. I can't find the damn tree this year!!!

Thanks for your help/experience with this.

I used garmin exclusively with my bassboat, and as miker stated, the equipment was flawless. Even marking offshore reefs, rockpiles etc. With the software I could see marinas, breakwalls and other features. Fantastic equipment.
