Hen Disaster!

I have a 'Ol Faithful' oak tree in my neighborhood. Every single fall, it delivers at least one big, huge hen. The hen I am holding in my avatar is from this great tree.

It is the perfect hen tree. It is a massive oak and it is bent from the base and seems to grow at about 70 degrees from vertical. It's exactly the kind of oak that will generate hens (in other words it's big, alive and slightly damaged).

I have been checking it every day for the last 2 weeks.

Well, this morning I pulled my car up, got out and saw a very healthy 12-15" hen. I decided to let it go until tonight. I would bring my daughter and let her harvest it and maybe it would grow a little bigger. The tree sits in my friend's yard. His yard borders a nice little woods and this tree is right on the border.

Well, I brought Anna back there tonight and discovered the disaster. The lawn guys were there today and they chopped that beautiful hen into a million bits.

I am so mad at myself and so disappointed. That was the first one of the year. I was sitting at my office and in meetings all day and my mind would wander to this wonderful griffola frondosa waiting for me.

Anyway, the only people on the planet that will relate to my disappoint are on this website, so thanks for letting me dump this here!

Ed

Hey, give the lawn guys a break. The don't know about good/bad mushrooms.

My own stepson, whom I love dearly, told me about MOWING all the MORELS in this one complex, they used to do. Broke my heart!

They think they are doing a good service by destroying them.

Best to talk to the lawn guy, if you have one, and explain things to them as to what to leave alone.

If it's a neighbors lawn, maybe do the same with him, and he can inform HIS lawn guys.

Not everybody in the world is willing to save, or eat, a wild growing fungus. LOL

Educate, educate, educate!

Isn't that what this site is about? Education of mushroom info.
Live it outside the board too!

But... Ed?
You DO have my deepest sympathy.
Hens are so hard to find around here. That would just kill me for the entire week!

On the other hand, I would never leave it until later either. LOL

Re: Hen Disaster!

If you see a hen today
take it on that very day
never never let it stay
because it will die
and fade away.

How true!!!!! Sorry about your loss
